8 levels or more IF function for EXCEL 2003 or below

"the specified formula cannot be entered because it uses more levels than are allowed in the current file format"

For those who actively use Microsoft Excel, may had found the error statement above. It caused by the limitation of nesting level of older version of the application (2003 and below). They only support up to 7 nesting level of a function in one statement.

There are some alternative ways to get around, here's some of them:

1. Upgrade your EXCEL to 2005 or above.
2. If you had a macro programming skill, create a function in VBA.
3. or, you can split the function up to some parts.

Here, we'll try the last option, Split up the function.

I have this function that had the nesting level issue:

=IF(H6<91.5%,40%,if(h6<92.5%,35%,if(h6<93.5%,30%,if(h6<94.5%,25%,if(h6<95.5,20%,if(h6<96.5%,16%,if(h6<97.5%,12%,if(h6<98.5%,8%,if(H6<99.5%,4%,0%)))))))))

as the limitation goes, than the function will only work if we cut the red part off:

...if(H6<99.5%,4%,0%)...

But that won't solve the problem. So, I came up with this way.

• Take the 8th level of nesting out (let's say use the C2 cell) and exchange it with "FALSE" value, so the function will look like this:

=IF(H6<91.5%,40%,if(h6<92.5%,35%,if(h6<93.5%,30%,if(h6<94.5%,25%,if(h6<95.5,20%,if(h6<96.5%,16%,if(h6<97.5%,12%,if(h6<98.5%,8%,FALSE))))))))

• Put the 8th IF to another cell and put another IF statement before it to check the output value of the IF statement above (from the C2 cell). If it return FALSE then execute the 8th IF. So the second part of the function will be like this:

=IF($C2=FALSE,IF(H6<99.5%,4%,0%))

• The last part is to choose which output to use. Here we'll use another IF. Check whether the return value of the first statement is FALSE or not. If it is, then use the return value of the second if statement. If not, then just use the value. Here's what it would be like:

=IF($C2=FALSE,$D2,$C2)

Windows Vista Hibernate Feature

I recently upgraded my OS to Vista (as one can see on one of my previous post). The elegant look-and-feel and better security -or so they claimed- had made me to take this journey (har..har...har...). I know but a bit about the Security issues, but the look-and-feel is one thing for certain. If you talked about ease-of-use, one can say that it's about fifty-fifty, like I found it easy to connect to a network but it's a walk-in-a-maze to find out how to tweak the setting.

I'm mobile and I need my laptop to boot-up and shut-down faster. If I were to follow the normal sequence of powering-up and shutting-down, it'll take forever. So I've found this HIBERNATE feature on XP litterally cut-the-middle-man. It could cut up until half of the time I'd needed on those routines.

But...! This won't happened on my Vista...!!!

Like I said earlier, I really went on a maze with Vista trying to find the setting I need, but came up with nothing but frustration. So I turned to my beloved uncle google and found out that Vista is no longer giving it's users the luxury to enable or disable hibernation via desktop graphical user interface.

So here's how to re-enable it:

1. Type cmd into your Vista's Start Menu Search Box, and use Ctrl+Shift+Enter or you can also right-click the item in the menu and choose Run as Administrator to open in administrator mode.
2. Type in the command powercfg -h on in the appearing command prompt window.
3. You're Done...! Here's the screen shots of before-and-after the process.

This Friday one of my friend suddenly pop-up with an interesting Q. "Got a Skype?", off course I said "No! And what the heck was it for?" and this successfully made me one of those old-timer, really! Since the first one came up in my mind after the Q was a a tool for having a phone-like call via the net or VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) to the regular phone line. Plus, we have to buy some credit to do the call. Never in my mind had I imagined that this tool evolved into some kind of user-killer software that can be a threat to YM in the internet relay chat software competition.
After some browse of the net to help me out from my cluelessness, I did find out it really is happening. Let's have some quote on what other have said:

• Kualitas suaranya hampir sama dengan menggunakan telepon. Bedanya kalau telepon saya tidak didepan komputer, sedangkan dengan skype saya bisa lansung melihat apa yang sedang dibicarakan, atau ditanyakan karena sama sama berada didepan komputer. • Yahoo is trying to do too much in one Messenger tool. Messenger is now too powerful, heavy and overloaded. Well...those are the comments. Overall, they seems to be agreed that Skype has better quality on the voice call feature over YM. That's not so surprising though, seeing that Skype was started for making a cheap long-distant voice-call solution.

Those are what I came-up with from the net, but personally I think that I'll stick to the old-glorious Yahoo! Messenger for now because I'm a typing type rather than a talky one *hehehe* Still, the choice is yours...

All are active within Windows Vista Premium with Aero and Sidebar feature activated.

• with 1 GB DDR2 RAM
• 120 GB Hard Drive total capacity
• etc.

Guess this should be celebrated somehow since it's Micros*ft Wind*ws for god sake (yeah go on... ):

Gameloft Mobile Game Collections

It's GAMING time...!

Wanna share some fun with you guys. Here's some lists of my Mobile Java Games. It wasn't much though, but maybe they'll help loosen up those tenses you've got.

Mo bagi-bagi koleksi Mobile Java Game gw nih. Walaupun ga seberapa lengkap, mungkin bisa ngebantu ngendorin saraf dan mungkin lain waktu bisa ditambah lagi deh.

These are intended to those Java MIDP 2.0 compatible devices (e.g Nokia N73, Sony Erricsson W55oi, etc.). Wanted to give the full roster of compatible cellphones, but heaven knows what hell i've gone through (too much eh ^_^). So just give it a shot.

Gamenya buat ponsel yang punya Java MIDP 2.0 seperti Nokia N73, Sony Erricsson W55oi, dan lain-lain. Monya sih ngasih daftar lengkap ponsel yg kompatibel, tapi belum punya counter hape sih. So... Just have a trial-error on these.  ^_^

To ease-up things, most of the information of the supported device comes from the supported screen resolutions info, which usually written in the file name. For example if the file name looks like this: [game_title]_SE_176x220.jar, then this game support all the Sony Erricsson device that has 176 (width) x 220 (height) in screen resolution, such as Sony Erricsson W 550i.

Untuk mudahnya, kebanyakan filenya ada keterangan resolusi layar ponsel yang didukung, seperti 176 x 220 untuk Sony Erricsson atau 240 x 320 untuk Nokia N73. Jadi sesuaikan aja dengan ponsel yang mo dipasangin gamenya.

[Trick] Multiple Yahoo! Messenger at once

Buat yang pake Yahoo! Messenger versi 8 & 9 (berdasarkan pengalaman sendiri dan teman-teman) di Windows XP, ada cara biar YM bisa dibuka lebih dari satu.

Untuk lebih cepatnya, Registry File yang diperlukan dapat di-download di sini.

Cara Penggunaan

1. Download Registry File dari link di atas.
   
2. Extract filenya dengan menggunakan aplikasi WinRar atau WinZip (akan menghasilkan file bernama "ym8multi.reg".
3. Jalankan file ym8multi.reg tersebut dengan di Double-Click.
4. Jika muncul konfirmasi dari Windows yang menanyakan apakah registri tersebut akan ditambahkan, pilih Yes (ini adalah kode untuk mengaktifkan fitur multiYM kita, BUKAN VIRUS).
5. Jika langkah-langkah di atas telah selesai, silahkan coba jalankan YM anda lebih dari sekali.

Mozilla and European Commision against Microsoft

Microsoft semakin terdesak setelah mendapat gugatan melakukan kecurangan lagi. Kali ini dalam hal praktik kompetisi browser web, dikarenakan kebijakannya menyatukan browser besutannya, Internet Explorer (IE), dalam satu paket penjualan sistem operasi Windows-nya.

Setelah sebelumnya (17 Januari 2009) tudingan dilancarkan oleh komisi Uni Eropa dalam sebuah Surat Peryataan-nya, sekarang giliran pesaing terdekatnya Mozilla Firefox turut mengaminin gugatan terhadap Microsoft tersebut.

"Kerusakan yang telah dilakukan Microsoft terhadap kompetisi, inovasi, dan langkah pengembangan web itu sendiri adalah nyata dan terus-menerus", kata ketua Yayasan Mozilla, Mitchell Baker, di dalam sebuah artikel Blog-nya yang di muat Jum'at, 6 Pebruari 2009 lalu. "Ada beberapa pertanyaan tentang apakah ada obat yang baik, dan apakah obat tersebut. Tetapi pertanyaan tentang obat yang sesuai tidak mengubah fakta penting. Praktek bisnis Microsoft secara fundamental telah mengurangi (bahkan sangat dekat dengan menghapuskan) kompetisi, pilihan, dan inovasi terhadap cara orang mengakses internet".

Oleh karena itu, Mozilla akan mendukung upaya Uni Eropa menghadang praktik persaingan tidak sehat yang dilakukan Microsoft. Dalam kasus ini, Mozilla berdiri sebagai pihak ketiga, yang berwenang memberikan pendapat ke regulator Eropa, melihat pernyataan yang dikirimkan Uni Eropa ke Microsoft, dan berpartisipasi dalam dengar pendapat jika diinginkan.

Sekitar setahun yang lalu, Opera juga telah melayangkan protes ke Komisi Uni Eropa terkait praktik curang yang dilakukan Microsoft tersebut.

Sebagai perbandingan, dalam data pangsa pasar browser di Eropa tahun lalu (September 2008) versi AT Internet Institute, IE menguasai pasar dengan pangsa pasar sebesar 60,12 %, diikuti oleh Mozilla Firefox dengan nilai 31,42%. Sedangkan posisi ke-3 hingga ke-5 berturut-turut ditempati oleh Opera, Safari dan Chrome dengan nilai masing-masing 4,24%, 2,55% dan 1,07%.

Walupun Mozilla dan Opera sudah menentukan sikap terkait indikasi kecurangan Microsoft tersebut, tapi lain halnya dengan Google dan Apple yang hingga saat ini belum memberikan pernyataan sikap.

Mengembalikan ‘Show hidden File and Folder’ yang hilang (spt terkena virus lokal Brontok)

[Tips] GMail Java Aplication + TelkomSel + Sony Ericsson W550i

Akhirnya setelah beberapa lama Browsing di Internet, Google-ing, Keluar-Masuk forum, terpecahkan juga masalah ini.
Telkomsel dengan produk SimPATI nya yang saya gunakan, ternyata bermasalah dengan GMail, yaitu pada saat menDownload GMail App di alamat: "http://www.gmail.com/app". Walaupun ponsel yang saya gunakan dapat dikenali dengan benar (Sony Ericsson W550i), tapi ketika link untuk Download aplikasi tersebut diklik, munculah peringatan "HTTP Error 406", yang berarti, browser yang digunakan tidak dapat menerima data jenis tersebut. Seperti perkataan salah seorang blogger, Adham Somantrie, di blognya "http://www.adhamsomantrie.com/?p=81":

Tampaknya operator ini sedikit bermasalah dengan HTTPS, karena ketika saya membuka gmail format WAP dari browser di ponsel, muncul error mengenai SSL/HTTPS ketika ingin membuka halaman login (secara halaman login gmail menggunakan HTTPS). Masalah yang lain adalah, ketika saya membuka situs Gmail App, walaupun ponsel saya dapat dikenal oleh situs tersebut, ternyata saya tidak dapat melakukan download aplikasi tersebut. Saya hanya mendapati "HTTP Error 406" di layar browser saya. Yang artinya, browser saya tidak dapat menerima data jenis tersebut.

(Maaf ya mas saya kutip)

Ternyata yang menjadi biang masalahnya adalah Proxy Server yang digunakan oleh TelkomSel. Setelah melakukan setting untuk menonaktifkannya seperti yang dicontohkan oleh Mas Adham, dengan sedikit penyesuaian untuk ponsel saya, maka masalah itu pun terselesaikan.

Langkah menonaktifkan Proxy TelkomSel untuk ponsel SE W550i adalah sbb:

1. Pada menu awal pilih Settings
2. Lalu geser ke tab Connectivity, kemudian pilih Settings for Java
3. Pilih sambungan GPRS TelkomSelnya (diponsel saya adalaha Telkomsel DATA)
4. Tekan tombol More dan pilih menu Settings
5. Pada menu Use Proxy ubahlah pilihannya menjadi No
6. Kemudian simpan perubahan dengan tombol Save

Langkah tersebut dilakukan pada ponsel dengan pilihan bahasa ponsel adalah English. Bagi yang menggunakan Bhs Indonesia langkah-2nya adalah sbb:

1. Setting
2. Konektifitas, Setting utk Java
3. Telkomsel DATA
4. Opsi, Setting
5. Pakai proxy, Tidak
6. Simpan

Setelah langkah-2 tersebut dilakukan, maka Aplikasi Gmail yang bermasalah tadi akhirnya bisa di-Download dengan menghabiskan pulsa sekitar Rp. 3.500,-. Ukuran file GMail-nya sendiri adalah sebesar 318 KB untuk versi 1.1.1-nya

• 1024x768, True Color, 72Hz

5. Coba lihat setting monitor anda sekarang (list yg disorot) ...
6. Kalau angka yang paling belakang adalah 60Hz, coba ganti dan pilih yang 70Hz atau lebih tinggi lagi.
7. Klik OK ...
8. Akan muncul window peringatan untuk mengetes terlebih dahulu, setting yang baru ... Klik OK ...
9. Jika monitor anda jadi gelap, itu artinya monitor tidak support setting resolusi, warna & refresh rate yang baru ...

Refresh rate <60Hz akan terlihat lebih lambat dari yang >70Hz ...
Kalaupun misalnya yang >70Hz terlihat lebih lambat ...
Itu adalah karena tipuan mata, objek yang berputar/bergetar sangat
cepat, akan terlihat gerakan2 yang lambat.
Sekedar saran, sebaiknya tidak perlu menggunakan setting refresh
yang terlalu tinggi.
walaupun mungkin sedikit terasa lebih nyaman ...
Setting 70Hz sudah cukup, karena refresh rate di atas 60Hz itu sudah
tidak terdeteksi oleh mata manusia ...

Senjata Laser akan Hadirkan Star Wars di Masa Depan

Senjata yang dikembangkan Pentagon akan membuat perang udara masa depan mirip dengan yang digambarkan dalam film Star Wars, dimana senjata-senjata laser bisa dipasangkan pada pesawat tempur dan mampu menembak peluru kendali musuh saat terbang.

Sistem Pertahanan Wilayah Laser Energi Tinggi (HELLADS atau High Energy Laser Area Defense System) ini dirancang oleh badan riset dan pengembangan Pentagon. Bobotnya kurang lebih hanya 750 kilogram dan ukurannya sebesar peti.

Untuk pemakaian saat ini, sistem seperti itu masih terlalu besar karena ia akan membutuhkan pendingin raksasa agar tidak terjadi overheating (panas tinggi). Sistem akan terlalu memakan tempat, bahkan bila dipasang pada pesawat besar seperti jumbo jet.

Namun badan riset Pentagon yang bernama DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency) mengatasi masalah ukuran tersebut dengan menggabungkan sistem laser cair dan padat guna mengurangi bobot dan ukurannya.

Laser cair disebutkan dapat menembakkan sinar secara terus menerus, namun membutuhkan sistem pendingin besar. Sementara sinar laser padat lebih kuat tapi harus ditembakkan dengan jeda supaya tidak terjadi panas berlebih.

"Kami menggabungkan kepadatan energi yang tinggi pada laser padat dengan pengaturan panas yang dipakai laser cair," kata manager proyek Don Woodbury, hari Rabu (24/8), seperti dikutip New Scientist.

Diberi julukan "HEL weapon" oleh pengembangnya, prototip senjata ini mampu menembakkan laser satu kilowatt (kW). Tapi untuk menghasilkan efek yang lebih dahsyat, Pentagon berencana membuat versi lebih kuat yang bisa memuntahkan tembakan laser hingga 15 kW.

Bila semua berjalan sesuai rencana, senjata lebih kuat yang bisa menghasilkan laser 150 kW dan mampu merontokkan sebuah peluru kendali akan segera hadir di tahun-tahun mendatang. Selanjutnya, pesawat-pesawat tempur masa depan bakal menggotong senjata ini dan perang udara pun akan mirip film Star Wars.
